Here are a few short paragraphs of lessons that have transformed my life and the lives of many others I am privileged to know.
The past and future are the subject of most thought, yet produce very little. The only time to act or not is now, and any thought about the past or future outcome is just a distraction to being and doing.
Even if you are planning for the future, you are doing it in the present moment. You have created a goal that puts a picture in your mind, keep that picture present and keep acting. While doing so, don’t judge yourself or anyone else for any “perceived” wrongs. Don’t let the actions of others distract you from your purpose.
Your past couldn’t have been any different, because once that past present moment passed, there was nothing to be done about it. In light of this, accept your current circumstance. Accepting it doesn’t mean that you can’t act to change your current circumstances, it just means that your path forward necessarily starts from where you are.
So much of what we think is important is just mind busyness and distraction, keeping us from living in and enjoying the present moment. Just for one day agree not to judge yourself or anyone else, and accept the truth that you are a perfectly imperfect human being with limitless potential. Anytime a thought from the past or an anxious thought of the future arises, acknowledge the thought, don’t think anymore about it, and take three long slow deep breaths. Then get on with paying attention to everything in your present moment. When the next disruptive thought occurs, just repeat the above.
Answer this question daily?
Which is the only time in which you can do anything?
- Past
- Present
- Future
Meditate by sitting quietly, taking long slow deep breaths, and keeping your focus on your breath. Anytime you catch yourself lost in thought, just gently return to focusing on your breath. If you catch yourself thinking, just acknowledge the thought and return to focus on the breath. If you catch yourself lost in thought a hundred times, that is good, that is the practice. This one simple practice has the potential to bring you much happiness and abundance.
I will end with the most important truth to help you live a happier, more abundant life. This is your life, give yourself grace. You aren’t perfect, and that is one hundred percent OK. No matter how bad or how good you think you are, so are so more. Like most of us you have lived in a world that has narrowed your view of what is possible. Your love and good relationship with yourself will improve every relationship in your life, and will direct more love and abundance back at you, that you can imagine.
