A Secret Worth Sharing

The Law of Attraction is a real thing and it works, but many overlook some of the obvious gaps in the way that people understand it.  I will get right to the heart of the secret worth sharing.  Two real ideas seem to conflict with one another, and between the two is where the secret lies.

  1. All you have to do is sync your mind with what you want in life, and you will attract it.
  2. Nothing gets done without doing the work.

Is there really an easy button that allows us to attract the things we want into our lives? Yes, but the inside and outside work still has to be done.  The secret is that when your mind and body are truly aligned with the things you want, the work doesn’t seem so bad.  To make this accessible and understandable, I will reduce the concept to some everyday task that you hate to do, but that you can learn to enjoy. For me, the daily grind that I hated to do was washing dishes. Several years ago I started a mindfulness practice.  One of the things I heard over and over from spiritual teachers is that “it isn’t what happens to us that is bad, it is what we think about what happens to us that causes it to be bad”.  Initially, that offended my sensibilities but I eventually came to find the absolute truth in that statement.  Part of my mindfulness practice was taking some of those daily tasks and applying practical mindfulness to them. In a mindfulness practice, you focus on an anchor for your attention like your breath in and out, or the background sounds in the room, and when you notice yourself getting distracted by thoughts, you gently return your attention to your anchor. When I first started these practical mindfulness exercises, I would take a couple of deep breaths before starting on the dishes, when I noticed the thought rising about how much I hate doing the dishes, I would just not add any more thoughts, and return my attention to my breath.  I would focus on each step in the process of washing the dishes, noticing the temperature of the water and how it felt. I noticed the food remnants disappearing as the washcloth passed across them.  Inevitably, my mind would try to remind me I didn’t like washing dishes.  Each time it did I went back to focusing on the breath and noticing every detail of the task.  What I found is that the truth was that there was nothing unpleasant about the process, and it indeed was my thoughts about it that made it bad.

You may be asking yourself what this has to do with attracting the things you want into your life, and I will say it has everything to do with it.  To demonstrate my point do the following exercise.

If you are a person who wants to attract more money (or something else) into your life, but your financial situation (or something else) isn’t close to what you desire, I want you to say the following out loud three times.  If there are others around, you can say it under your breath, or wait until later when you are alone. If it is better relationships that you want in your life, just replace money with better relationships or whatever you desire more of in the statement below. Notice your thoughts and feelings as you say the following phrase.

  • Money Flows to me with effortless ease.

You may notice as you say it out loud that the statement doesn’t feel true, and there is some negative feeling of incongruence about making that statement out loud.  These thoughts and feelings come from the same place as my past feelings about doing dishes.  They are learned thought patterns that developed somewhere in the past, and have no basis in reality.  I can say they have no basis in reality because when I wash the dishes mindfully, I don’t find anything at all bad about the act of washing the dishes, only my old thoughts about the process.  Think this through, because the key to getting yourself into alignment with all that you want to bring into your life.  It is just a matter of noticing your thoughts and realizing that the only thing holding you back is unconscious thoughts that have gotten trained into your mind somewhere along the way.  Once you can learn to identify and let go of the negative thoughts that keep you from bringing more of what you want into your life then the law of attraction will bring you the opportunities you need to act on, which you will then do without complaint or negative thoughts.  That will then get you closer to getting what you want more of.

One parting note.  If you have negative thoughts and emotions about what you want more of, don’t try to push them down.  Pushing them down will just make them come back harder later.  When you notice the thoughts and emotions just acknowledge them, don’t add any thoughts to them,  and go back to what you have chosen as your anchor.  My anchor has always been to go back to focusing on my breath going in and out.   Then each day repeat your statement above regularly.  When you notice that you are beginning to align your mind, body, and soul with that statement the law of attraction will indeed attract those things into your life.  If you want to know more about attracting what you want into your life, you can reach out at bpinkston@brentpinkston.com or click here.
