Congratulations on seeing the day where you finally have everything. On the day you found the path that starts with more than you can imagine. Read these next few lines and you are already there.
Your mind, whether you realize it or not, is constantly thinking about the past or the future. You are worried about something that is going to happen tomorrow, or fretting about something that happened yesterday. Maybe you are excited for an upcoming vacation. What happens when you take four deep breaths, and just notice the present moment and just feel only what is in the present moment? If a thought arises, just take four more deep breaths, and focus on those breaths. What did you find?
I am not yet over thoughts of the past or future completely, but I spend enough time right here in the present moment that the amazing benefit of this truth has unfolded my life in an incredible way. When I first started focusing only on the present moment, I thought things would go undone, and poverty was on the way. Exactly the opposite happened. Get your head out of the past and future and spend more time noticing the abundance in the present moment.
If you miss a plane, cab, or an appointment tomorrow, you will almost immediately feel a sense of dread. If this happens just take four deep breaths and let it go. In the coming day or so, you will find that it doesn’t matter at all. You are still there, and nothing immediately bad is happening.
You might be asking how I plan, and prioritize if I am only operating in the present moment. It is easy and obvious. I plan based on the best information I have on what needs to be done, and I do it in the present moment. The difference is that I don’t invest in any thought about the uncertainty of the future, or how my past performance might affect this one. Actually being human I still let my thoughts get in the way sometimes, but I am getting better.
You may ask, “what about goals?” I have goals just like you probably do if you are reading this. I just don’t invest any thought about their outcome or difficulty. When I do the tasks, I do them in the present moment and let any thoughts about how my past might cause me to fail, or the consequences of a future failure. I just do the best I can right now and pay close attention to each action. Except when I don’t, but that is the “goal”. I don’t want to give anyone the impression I have it all figured out, but I do know my life is more abundant than it used to be.
If you just take this moment and focus on it and pay attention like it has a secret to tell you, your life will begin to unfold as abundantly as mine has. I can’t tell you how to do this for you, but I can tell you how I did it. I started with mindfulness practice and reading “A New Earth” by Eckart Tolle. Every day, twice per day I spend twenty minutes just focusing on slow breaths in and out. If I notice my mind getting caught up in thought, I just go back to focusing on the breath. I also pick several tasks per day to pay attention to every detail of the task. I don’t add any additional thoughts to them while doing them.
